How to Create a Beaded Pipe Cleaner Butterfly
Are you ready to create your own beaded clothespin butterfly? Have your child go gather supplies, and let’s get started!
Step 1: Gather your supplies for your clothespin butterfly
When gathering supplies, here are a few things to keep in mind.
The larger clothespins work much better for this craft butterfly than the smaller clothespins. Also, the color of your pipe cleaner doesn’t really matter, as beads will hide it. =)
Step 2: Decorate your clothespin
Do you have glitter on hand? If so, this is the perfect time to put it to use. First, cover your clothespin with glue. Any type of glue will work, but tacky glue works best.
Next, sprinkle enough glitter on your clothespin until it’s completely covered. Let it dry for a few minutes, then dump the remaining glitter into the bottle.

Step 3: Add beads to each pipe cleaner
You will need three pipe cleaners for this project. Two will be used for the butterfly’s wings, and the third will be used as the antenna.
Add beads to two of the pipe cleaners. You can do patterns, the same colored beads, or add beads as you grab them.
Step 4: Time to make the wings
When you add beads to both pipe cleaners, you’ll want to make sure that you leave an inch of room at the end.
Then tie off each end, similar to the picture below. Then create room at both the top and bottom of the circle. You will then twist your circle to create wings.
Remember, you want to have some room left without beads in the middle so that they will fit in the clothespin.
The image below is just one pipe cleaner. You’ll need to do this twice with both pipe cleaners.
Step 5: Assemble your butterfly
Now it’s time to assemble your butterfly craft! Open the clothespin and place both sets of wings inside the front of the clothespin.
There will be a spot for both pipe cleaners to sit. I didn’t glue anything, and they stayed together perfectly. However, feel free to glue them if you’d like.
Step 6: Add the antenna
To finish off your beaded butterfly craft, add antennas. Begin by cutting your last pipe cleaner to size (3-4 inches). Then create a V shape, adding a single bead on both ends.
Lastly, place the antenna into the mouth of the clothespin. There you have your finished butterfly craft for kids!
If you want, you can then place a magnet on the bottom and stick them to your fridge. Or place your beaded butterfly on your window sill.
